Urushi Exhibition 2018

As the urushi lacquer hardens, it absorbs moisture from the air. This process gives lacquerware its enduring gloss and smooth texture. It also makes it highly durable—resistant to water, acids, alkalis, alcohol, and fluctuations in temperature. These unique qualities are what initially elevated lacquer into an art form.
Urushi culture exemplifies an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly production cycle: planting lacquer trees, harvesting and refining their sap (providing rural employment), using natural materials, and creating authentic items meant to be passed down through generations.
In the Edo period (1603–1868), eshi were painters who captivated the hearts of the people.
This exhibition presented original urushi works and paintings that evoke the tradition of eshi. These works express the Japanese concept of "yo no bi"—the beauty found in everyday, functional objects.
